More about Rich Stevens...
(Maybe you heard about these, but didn't know it was
Rich Stevens!)
It was in Tallassee, Florida that Rich got "Fed up" with
the lack of Christmas spirit in the city....It was Dec
13th and it was 77 degrees...so he locked himself in the
studio at Z-103/WTHZ and began playing Bruce
Springsteen's "Santa Clause is coming to town" at 6am as
the first song on his morning show...proceeded by the
same song over and over AND over again..... when he was
done at 10am and after the same song played 62 times, it
already hit the AP & UPI News Wires "DJ TRIES TO BRING
X-MAS SPIRIT TO FLORIDA"....then the camera crews
started lining up..CNN, NBC, ABC and CBS...Reporters
were calling from around the world...That night Rich was
featured on, not only the local news but on ALL the
Major Networks as well...The next day guess who was
featured on the FRONT PAGE of the local newspaper and
USA TODAY....
It was in Orlando, Florida that Rich had THE ONLY radio
interview with Magic Johnson after he told the world on
the Arsenio Hall show he (Magic) had the HIV
virus...Magic turned down numerous requests for
interviews around the world including Dan Rather and
Peter Jennings and numerous radio folks...but appeared
live in the studio with Rich at 102 JAMZ/WJHM during his
afternoon drive show for over an hour surrounded by
media from all around the world while Rich asked all the
questions everyone wanted to know...not only was the
interview shown and talked about on ALL the local and
National Networks but Rich was featured that night with
Magic on Entertainment Tonight and CNN live after the
interview...and that following week, Rich and Magic were
featured on the Cover of Radio & Records ( Radio
industry newspaper) as well!
It was in St Louis, Missouri at Z1077/KSLZ that Rich
took advantage of the "Power of radio"...the US Treasury
just spent over $40 Million dollars to promote the new
design of the $20 dollar bill...it took less than 3
hours for Rich to put not only St Louis in a frenzy but
the Feds in DC as well...It was election day and Rich
told his listeners they had until midnight to "Exchange
their old 20's for the new ones..." because they would
be useless after midnight...the phones went crazy, the
main switchboard operator was mad as hell at Rich
because ALL THE CALLS were about this statement "Rich
Stevens made a few minutes ago"...in less than an hour
all the local TV stations were at the station inquiring
about this, because they too were bombarded by calls
from concerned citizens and bank personnel as well...the
next thing it hit the AP wire and Washington was
calling...and the Feds were on their way to the studio
as well...they demanded an apology and an immediate
retraction...they weren't amused...the local TV stations
ran it on the 6 and 11pm casts and NBC, CBS and CNN
picked it up as well! Guess who's picture along with a
feature article made the Cover of USA Today the next
morning...
